January 2014 Singers Roster

Artistic Director Brian Schmidt  says of this year's concerts and singers, "I am extremely excited to put together this concert of extraordinary and beautiful modern sacred music. It is by far our most challenging program yet with one of our most talented rosters of singers, which is a thrilling combination. Our audiences are in for a treat!"  Take a look at our THE SINGERS page for this season's roster.

What the critics have to say about us...

"...rich and impassioned lines that are distinctive in shape, shading and personality."
          Donald Rosenberg in Gramophone

"Few American choirs (or for that matter, any others) have made this kind of open-mouthed, soul-satisfying first impression on me."
Lindsay Koop in American Record Guide

"Bach at its best!  Sung with understanding and joy."
Steve Staruch of Minnesota Public Radio

"..it is the Durufle Requiem that unequivocally showcases the musical depth of this ensemble along with Schmidt's masterful musicianship.  From the opening phrases of the Introit to the hauntingly melodic, powerful Offertory and the chant-influenced and commanding Libera Me, the beauty of Durufle's masterpiece is triumphant."
Allan Denney in Choral Journal (October 2013)

It has been a wonderful dream come true for me, a native of Sioux Falls, to be a professional choral singer right here in South Dakota. Because of the Chorale's unique win-win membership concept of local and national singers, I have already benefitted from this collaboration by having been invited as guest pianist for a Grammy-winning choir.  As local hosts, we love welcoming other fine musicians into our community for exceptional music-making.  It's the best of both worlds!
Deanna Wehrspann, composer and collaborative pianist from Sioux Falls, SD

I found [singing with the South Dakota Chorale] to be the highest level of choral work I'd done since leaving Cantus.  I had otherwise sworn off choral work in favor of opera...literally, it was the first, and remains the only choral work (beyond some subbing for church ensembles in NYC) I've done in the nearly 6 years since leaving the Midwest!  The group's dynamic under Brian's direction allows for each singer to ADD their work for a collective whole rather than the standard choral mantra of stripping away the individual prowess to create the whole.  It is the core reason I look forward to being a part of this group whenever possible.  That same sentiment is shared by the other singers who return as often as possible as well.  The community involvement has led to some great connections, not just in concert attendance but also in the hospitality of the home stays as evidenced by singers clawing at the chance to stay at their favorite homes.
Tom McNichols, professional singer based in New York City.

My involvement in SDC has been very beneficial.  It is very rewarding musically, and I treasure it as time with my friends and colleagues, which keeps me connected for future performing opportunities and collaborations.
John Grau, Voice Faculty at University of Colorado-Boulder.

The South Dakota Chorale is a very special ensemble to all of the singers. Its a time to reconnect with old and new friends and create truly beautiful and expressive performances of fantastic repertoire. Brian gives us the freedom to interpret and sing freely with his open sound concept for the ensemble. I look forward to my time in South Dakota every year!
Zachary Colby, member of CANTUS

Working with the South Dakota Chorale was a wonderful experience!  When the Chorale came in to rehearse with us, the students got so excited about the concert.  For many of them, it was a new experience to get to sing with adults and they realized that singing can go on well beyond high school.  It was a significant maturing point for the choir and the combined concert turned out to be the favorite choir event of the year for many of them.

I can't wait to sing with a choir of this caliber with my high school choir, in my own church. I get the privilege of singing in choirs at the cathedral every Sunday.... Wonderful acoustics and a compellingly beautiful church.
Brody Krogman, singer in the 2012-2013 Lincoln High School Concert Choir
